OVERVIEW: 

This 60-minute training webinar is another in our "Service, Safety, and Security" series for all library staff and library leaders, presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by ALA author and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht.

For this session, Dr. Albrecht hosts a guided interview with California Fire Chief and longtime Advanced EMT Robert May, JD, as they discuss the range of possible medical events that could happen in a library and may require staff to provide basic first aid until EMTs or firefighters arrive.

A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

LEARNING AGENDA: 

• How “Good Samaritan” laws protect staff from liability when providing good-faith first aid in all 50 states.
• Potential medical events at the library: falls by kids or the elderly; broken bones; cuts; sprains or dislocations; heart attacks or strokes; heat exhaustion or heat stroke; disabled or wheelchair patrons falling; patrons with insulin/low blood sugar symptoms.
• The need for a fully-stocked large-scale “Big Box" first aid kit, stored in various parts of the library, including every floor if it’s a multi-story building. Recent mass attacks and mass shootings have shown how most first aid kits don’t have enough tourniquets or chest wound clotting bandages. Using tourniquets for a severe bleeding injury will require staff to practice using them.
• Is CPR use now about giving compressions only?
• AED machines: how they work, how to get trained, and a refresher discussion with staffers who have already been trained.
• How to recognize and treat shock in an injured person.
• Opiate drug overdoses: warning signs, safe responses, Narcan use. Police or paramedic response (scene safety when an overdose patient recovers).
• Blood-born pathogen safety and medical HAZMAT issues.

DR. STEVE ALBRECHT

Since 2000, Dr. Steve Albrecht has trained thousands of library employees in 25+ states, live and online, in service, safety, and security. His programs are fast, entertaining, and provide tools that can be put to use immediately in the library workspace with all types of patrons. In 2015, the ALA published his book, Library Security: Better Communication, Safer Facilities. He is currently writing the sequel, The Safe Library: Keeping Staff and Patrons Secure in a Changing World.

Steve holds a doctoral degree in Business Administration (D.B.A.), an M.A. in Security Management, a B.A. in English, and a B.S. in Psychology. He is board-certified in HR, security management, employee coaching, and threat assessment.

He has written 24 books on business, security, and leadership topics. He lives with seven dogs, two cats, and three chickens.
