Library 2.0 Webinar: "Patron Harassment Scenarios: What to Do as a Staffer and a Leader"

"Patron Harassment Scenarios: What to Do as a Staffer and a Leader"
Part of the Library 2.0 Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

OVERVIEW

Just because something is illegal and has been for a long time (1964, to be exact), doesn’t mean it has stopped happening. The passage of the Civil Rights Act started the necessary discussions and prevention processes to address sexual and racial harassment in many facets of our personal and professional lives, including the workplace.

And yet, despite sexual and racial harassment being a well-defined issue -- with policies; notification choices; investigation steps; support for targets; and consequences for perpetrators -- it exists as a shadow issue in many agencies, including libraries. Where many organizations have to deal with harassers who are other co-workers, in the library environment, it’s most likely to come from patrons, vendors, visitors, and even the possibility of elected or appointed officials.

Dr. Steve Albrecht has heard about this concern so often from his library training clients that he devoted a chapter from his forthcoming book, The Safe Library, to the problem. Library leaders, managers, and supervisors need to know what is happening if it affects the safety and peace of mind of their employees. They can’t fix what they don’t know about. Library employees need to have the courage to talk about these issues with each other, report them to management, and expect a resolution that creates a harassment-free workplace.

To prevent it, we need to discuss its many forms and empower harassment targets (Steve does not like the term “victims”) to protect and defend themselves, using all legal, ethical, and creative means.

This is a 60-minute training webinar presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by ALA author and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. This overview session is another in our “Essential Library Leadership Series,” for all library leaders. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

LEARNING AGENDA:

  • Review common (and uncommon) library employee-patron harassment scenarios.
  • How common is “quid pro quo” sexual harassment? And what can be done if the QPQ perpetrator is a prominent community member?
  • Discuss the stakeholders’ role for “multiple channels of reporting” to work effectively.
  • Review a typical complex harassment investigation done by an HR professional, a lawyer, or a private investigator.
  • Review the harassment prevention tip sheet from Pen.org.
  • Review setting library use (or no-use) boundaries for patrons who are repeat offenders.
  • Discuss what language must be in a library’s Harassment Prevention Policy.

"Narcan: What Every Librarian Needs to Know About Opiate Overdoses" - New Dr. Steve Albrecht Blog Post on Library 2.0

We've just posted a new blog post by Dr. Albrecht in our "Library Service, Safety, & Security" section of Library 2.0"Narcan: What Every Librarian Needs to Know About Opiate Overdoses."
The number of fatal overdoses due to opiate use (heroin, fentanyl, pain pills) continues to surge in the US, as does the record amounts of fentanyl powder and pills seized at the southern border. A recent arrest in Arizona revealed the driver was transporting 340 packages of fentanyl pills, weighing 187 pounds, and worth an estimated $4.3 million. (A fatal dose - injected, swallowed, or inhaled - can be as small as a dozen grains of sand.)
...Since libraries are public places, the likelihood of opiate drug users coming to the facility to either use drugs, buy or sell drugs, or rest while under the influence, means that the possibility of a medical emergency due to their overdose is a reality.
You can read the full post here

While Dr. Albrecht's twice-monthly podcast and blog posts are available for free, as are our regular mini-conferences and all the conference recordings, we also offer a series of Dr. Albrecht paid webinars and recordings which are available for individual or group viewing here.

Library 2.0 Webinar: "Library Politics: Better Dealings With Your Elected, and Appointed Officials"

"Library Politics: Better Dealings With Your Elected and Appointed Officials"
Part of the Library 2.0 "Essential Library Leadership" Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

OVERVIEW

All library politics is local... Or is it? As a library leader, how you interact with the various political leaders in your circle of influence can make or break your current and future success. You may deal with local elected or appointed officials, like Library Boards; with City Council members and the county Board of Supervisors; with Planning Boards; with Community Development Boards; with Friends of the Library; and even with the Friends of Trees. You may have to make your case for capital improvements, more budget dollars or personnel, or changes in policies, to elected or appointed people who know a lot or a little about running a library. You may have to work with the administrators of federal government programs; with state library associations; or with local community groups. You will need to present your needs, often in a public forum, using data, documentation, and justifications they can agree upon, vote on, and sign-off on. How you manage these relationships will require tact, communication skills, and good Social Intelligence (the ability to read the room and say or do the right things based on who is in that room).

  • Every local, state, or federal politician has two personal agendas. Do you know what they are?
  • How can you make it easier for them to say yes? Preparing your facts and figures.
  • Matching your work and goals to your city or county’s Strategic Plan.
  • Presentation skills overview: speaking in public has its own stressors.
  • Observing visible, overt political agendas versus invisible, covert political agendas.
  • Working with volunteer boards, Friends of the Library, and oversight groups.
  • What do you do when board members don’t get along with each other?
  • Using tradeoffs versus concessions with politicians.
  • Answering the “impact questions”: fiscal, community, service, (and their reputation).

New Dr. Albrecht Library 2.0 Podcast: "Bullets Shot Into Books and Bomb Threats: What to Do?"

We've just posted a new Dr. Albrecht podcast in our "Library Service, Safety, & Security" section of Library 2.0"Bullets Shot Into Books and Bomb Threats: What to Do?"
"So my topic for this half hour is bullets, and books, bomb threats, and what we can do to manage fear, especially fear of threats that may have come from patrons or anonymously, inside the library experience.
"I've got a lot of background in this been doing for a long time--over 30 years now. And I have some strong feelings about things like bomb threats. I also want to talk about a story which happened in Kalispell, Montana, just recently in the first week of August 2022. So we can look at that, and kind of figure out what your library's response would be, and what your response would be as a an employee, when faced with this situation..."
