Emotional Intelligence for Librarians: A Masterclass with Loida Garcia-Febo

Emotional Intelligence: A Masterclass with Loida Garcia-Febo
The Library 2.0 Mental Health and Wellness Series

OVERVIEW

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is how you manage yourself and your relationships with others, according to Daniel Goleman, who popularized the construct in his book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ (1995). Essentially, this is the ability to manage both your own emotions and understand the emotions of people around you.

Why EI is important? We live in an ever-changing world; it can be difficult for everyone, and EI can help us better understand what people are feeling and why they feel that way. This can help us to strengthen communications, decision-making, and relationships between library workers, team members, and other people in general. EI is becoming a key resource to help us provide the support needed by team members during challenging / stressful times or during the introduction of changes in the library workflow. In this webinar, Garcia-Febo will deep dive in the themes of Emotional Intelligence. She will also share practical applications and tips throughout the program.

This 60-minute training is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by Loida Garcia-Febo. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

New Library Webinar - "Serving Elderly Patrons at Risk: Prevention Steps for a Fragile Population"

Serving Elderly Patrons at Risk:
Prevention Steps for a Fragile Population
Part of the Library 2.0 Service, Safety, and Security Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

OVERVIEW

Senior citizens love their libraries, support their libraries, and urge their elected and appointed officials to keep their libraries open and even press them to build new ones. Your library may have specific programs for senior patrons and you recognize and nurture those relationships with the ones who come to your library most often.

If you meet and greet seniors at your library facility, you may also have some concerns about their mobility, cognitive issues, and physical safety. Worse yet, elderly people are frequent victims of financial abuse from unscrupulous family members; “caregivers” (who steal from or physically abuse the person, instead of giving supportive, nurturing care); or strangers who became their “new best friend.” This session is all about building your awareness toward physical, cognitive, and abuse possibilities with our senior patrons.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Talking to elderly patrons with cognitive issues.
  • Preventing falls or other injuries inside the library.
  • Assessing potential caregiver abuse.
  • Being a Mandated Reporter: working with Adult Protective Services (APS).
  • Identifying a potential “sweetheart scam.”

This 60-minute overview session on how to respond step-by-step to service situations in the library is another in our “Essential Librarian Series,” designed to be shown to new staff and leaders and to provide a refresher for all who work in the library, and hosted by trainer, author, and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

New "Ask Dr. Steve" Blog Post - “Praying, Meditating, or Sleeping?”

We've just posted a new "Ask Dr. Steve" blog post by Dr. Steve Albrecht in our "The Safe Library" section of Library 2.0"Praying, Meditating, or Sleeping?"
Dear Dr. Steve - Our Code of Conduct prohibits patrons from sleeping in the library. Our staff is quite lenient on this issue and they usually just “verbally nudge people awake” and remind them about the rule. There are some patrons who come here just to sleep and when staff wakes them up from an obvious deep sleep they say, “I wasn’t sleeping! I was praying or meditating and you disrupted me!”
This seems like a highly prepared answer, of course, and it kind of catches staff off guard, like it really was their fault for disrupting this patron’s worship or mediation. What should we do?
You can read to the whole post here
