Motivating students to learn can be a challenge. Often distracted and easily bored, these students are also critical thinkers capable of thriving in the online classroom while learning 21st-century skills. How do we hold their attention, develop their abilities, and engage them in the online forum? In moving from classroom-based instruction to online instruction, the role of the faculty member changes from the content presenter to the facilitator of online learning. 'Engaging Online Learners' highlights six essential elements which are critical to success in distance learning: honesty, responsiveness, relevance, respect, openness, and empowerment. This session will look at what it takes to create an online learning community that is safe, supportive, interactive, and engaging. What tools and methods will be discussed on “What makes online learning effective and engaging to the student?
Candy Mowen Candy Mowen, MS Ed., MBA, CFD has 11 years of experience in higher education as a professor of Mathematics. She received the distinction of CFD (Certified Faculty Developer) from the Learning Resources Network which enables her to train faculty in the latest, most advanced faculty development strategies and techniques. As a CFD, she has been part of the training team for LMS’s platforms in eLearning, Bongo, BrightSpace, and MML (MyMath Lab). Most recently, Mowen received her Graduate Certificate in Mathematics from Walden University. She also holds two Master of Science Degrees in Higher Education minoring in Teaching and Learning and Online Technology from Kaplan University now Purdue University. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting followed by 26 years in the corporate field as an accountant. In 2013 Candy received the honor of being awarded Educator-of-the-Year at the Maryland Campus of Kaplan University. William Poindexter William Poindexter started working on computers when he was still in high school, and afer graduating joined the Marine Corps as a Tactical Data Systems operator where he worked for almost 8 years. How do we keep our eye on equity during this period of remote learning? We cannot afford to ignore the achievement gap during this time, but what can we do to ensure it doesn't get exacerbated? It starts with helping students take more control over their learning, especially those that were behind grade level when schools closed due to COVID-19. The key is bringing the principles of culturally responsive teaching into how we design and deliver instruction online. First we have to let go of misconceptions about what culturally responsive teaching is and learn how to authentically leverage culture as a cognitive scaffold to help deepen learning. Session attendees will take away three core CRT design principles and three high leverage practices that can be easily incorporated into our remote teaching.
Zaretta Hammond Ms. Hammond is a national education consultant and author of Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain: Promoting Authentic Engagement and Rigor for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students. She is a former high school and community college expository writing instructor. She has published articles in Educational Leadership, The Learning Professional, and Phi Delta Kappan. She is passionate about the intersectionality of equity and culturally responsive teaching as a way to help educators close opportunity and learning gaps for under-served students. She has consulted widely with school districts, regional education service agencies, and coaching organizations across the country on ways to support students to accelerate their own learning through the responsive social, emotional and academic development. Ms. Hammond sits on the Board of Trustees of the Center for Collaborative Classroom and is involved in a number of working groups committed to educational equity through improvement science and the science of learning. |

Does it seem your inbox is bursting with announcements for webinars? With face-to-face conferencing ground to a halt during social distancing, professional development has transitioned to an almost entirely virtual experience. Unfortunately, it’s often an underwhelming and disappointing one. Monotone speakers. Loads of bullet point slides—and presenters who just read them—or notes that are drier than dust. Effective teaching skills do not always transfer to online presenting as evidenced in many webinars. We can do better. Session attendees will takeaway some basic skills and practices that can lead them to design and deliver more engaging webinars. One outcome of the coronavirus crisis is that webinars are likely to emerge as the standard for remote professional development for the foreseeable future. We all need to commit to making them a better user experience. Our colleagues deserve that much.

There is one more important advantage to personalized learning that cannot be underestimated. Educators know that all learners have different abilities and experiences and will respond in unique ways to learning opportunities. An enormous challenge we face in our education system is how to equitably recognize these differences and develop learning approaches that help all learners achieve. Creating tailored learning environments for each learner can increase equity by providing every learner what they need to be successful, regardless of race, ethnicity, first language, culture, socio-economic background, physical and mental abilities, geography, or generation. Student course evaluations are often the subject of faculty complaints, given their inherent weaknesses as assessment instruments. Many online instructors are resistant to using them an indicator of their own instructional effectiveness – and to be fair the research has shown that student evaluations are subject to a range of biases and inaccuracies. The presenter’s own experience is that despite the recognized flaws of student course evaluations, they have the potential to help online instructors improve the design of the course as well as their instructional strategies. In the session attendees will receive ten tips for focusing on ways to anticipate what most helps students learn and succeed as online learners, based on information derived from an analysis of their course evaluations. There’s no doubt that most online instructors review their course evaluations seeking clues to learning improvement, but often end up with low impact tweaks to assignments or syllabi. These twelve tips can lead to substantive fundamental pedagogical change in online course delivery.
