For over a decade Kari Byron has been a strong presence in the world of reality-based science and travel television. She is best known as a host on Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters but has gone on to host and produce shows spanning several networks; Head Rush, Punkin Chunkin, LDRS, Thrill Factor, Strange Trips, America Declassified, The White Rabbit Project, Positive Energy and Crash Test World. Her first book Crash Test Girl, An Unlikely Experiment in Using the Scientific Method to Answer Life's Biggest Questions, is on shelves now. Fostering her curious nature, she spent a lifetime acquiring odd skills and interests. After graduating college and traveling the world she decided to settle in San Francisco and pursue a career as a sculptor. Special effects and prop making seemed like a perfect fit. Trying to break into the field, she got an internship at M5 industries with Jamie Hyneman. Her first day turned out to be the beginning of Mythbusters, and a career in television. Though her dream was to be a working artist somehow handling poop, eating bugs, wiring explosives and scraping chicken guts off the ceiling turned out to be the beginning of her real dream job. Her passion for smart entertainment has lead her around the world, speaking on the role of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) programming on television.
Yong Zhao, Ph.DFoundation Distinguished Professor, School of Education at the University of Kansas
Yong Zhao is a Foundation Distinguished Professor in the School of Education at the University of Kansas and a professor in Educational Leadership at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education in Australia. He previously served as the Presidential Chair, Associate Dean, and Director of the Institute for Global and Online Education in the College of Education, University of Oregon, where he was also a Professor in the Department of Educational Measurement, Policy, and Leadership. Prior to Oregon, Yong Zhao was University Distinguished Professor at the College of Education, Michigan State University, where he also served as the founding director of the Center for Teaching and Technology, executive director of the Confucius Institute, as well as the US-China Center for Research on Educational Excellence. Yong Zhao has received numerous awards including the Early Career Award from the American Educational Research Association, Outstanding Public Educator from Horace Mann League of USA, and Distinguished Achievement Award in Professional Development from the Association of Education Publishers. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Education and a fellow of the International Academy of Education. He has been recognized as one of the most influential education scholars. Zhao was born in China’s Sichuan Province. He received his B.A. in English Language Education from Sichuan Institute of Foreign Languages in Chongqing, China in 1986. After teaching English in China for six years, he came to Linfield College as a visiting scholar in 1992. He then began his graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1993. He received his masters in Education in 1994 and Ph.D. in 1996. He joined the faculty at MSU in 1996 after working as the Language Center Coordinator at Willamette University and a language specialist at Hamilton College.
Marley RichardsHomeschool Student
Marley Richards is a youth rights advocate who values young people being clear on their boundaries and comfortable being their authentic selves. She has co-organized and hosted workshops in North America and Africa to offer adults guidance on supporting young people taking education into their own hands, focusing on confident autonomy and emergent structure. While much of her outreach is aimed at adults, she discusses solutions to youth rights violations among other young people by way of debate. She is currently a volunteer for the National Youth Rights Organization and an unschooler.

Sugata Mitra is Professor Emeritus at NIIT University, Rajasthan, India. A Ph.D. in theoretical physics, he retired in 2019 as Professor of Educational Technology at Newcastle University in England, after 13 years there including a year in 2012 as Visiting Professor at MIT MediaLab in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. His work on children’s education include the ‘hole in the wall’ experiment where children access the internet in unsupervised groups, the idea of Self Organised Learning Environments (SOLEs) in schools, the role of experienced educators over the internet in a ‘Granny Cloud’ and the School in the Cloud where children take charge of their learning – anywhere. Jenny Buccos is a multi-award winning director and producer. She is the founder of the ProjectExplorer educational non-profit, a multimedia education strategist, and an agent for global citizenship. She the Creator and Executive Producer of Crash Test World - a family-focused TV series with Kari Byron (Mythbusters) and Intuitive Content. (airing on Discovery in 2020.) In 2003, before the existence of YouTube, she founded ProjectExplorer.org, a free multimedia website designed to educate primary and secondary school students about global issues and world cultures and histories. Lisa Nielsen is The Innovative Educator. She found school boring and irrelevant. That ticked her off so she became a public school educator who works to help change that for others. She does this by finding and sharing innovative ways to prepare students for relevant and real-world success. Among other things, this means ensuring educators and students have a voice in conversations, issues, and policies that affect them. She began her career in the 90s as a librarian which was a perfect fit enabling her to create a vibrant oasis in Harlem where students could find their passions with support from the community. Stephen Ritz is a South Bronx educator who believes that students should not have to leave their community to live, learn, and earn in a better one. An internationally acclaimed award-winning educator, Stephen is the author of the best-selling book, The Power Of A Plant, and founder of Green Bronx Machine. Known as “America’s Favorite Teacher,” Stephen is responsible for creating the first edible classroom in the world, which he has evolved into the National Health, Wellness and Learning Center. He and his students have grown more than 100,000 pounds of vegetables in the South Bronx, and in the process, Stephen has moved school attendance from 40% to 93% daily and helped provide 2,200 youth jobs in the Bronx. A journalist by trade, Lenore spent 14 years at The New York Daily News as a reporter-turned-opinion columnist, and two more at The New York Sun. In 2008, after her column "Why I Let My 9 Year Old Ride the Subway Alone" landed her on every talk show from The Today Show to Dr. Phil, Lenore founded the book and blog “Free-Range Kids.” These launched the anti-helicopter parenting movement and garnered her the nickname, “America’s Worst Mom.” She got a promotion of sorts when Discovery Life tapped her to host the reality TV show, World’s Worst Mom. Barbara is a coach, teacher, writer, disruptor, risk-taker, learning designer, connector, and visionary. She calls herself a creative learning strategist where others call her a “change-maker.” Whenever anyone told Barbara she couldn’t do something, she took it as a challenge. Her dream long ago was to create an online place for educators that was safe and secure with all the tools and resources in one place. She did it with My eCoach as early as 1999 — way before there was Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, or Pinterest. Barbara is what some call a “Digital Pioneer.” With her coaching background and an amazing team, they created coaching and mentoring strategies and processes that have been adopted in schools and districts in the U.S. and other countries. Barbara coined the phrase “Making Learning Personal” in 2000 and trademarked it in 2002. After several years later, they decided to do what they do best and consult independently. For Barbara, this meant expanding on the coaching she had been doing for years. Barbara continues to find and research new tools and methods that help educators create learner-centered environments and how any person no matter what age can find their purpose and develop agency. In 2017, she visited schools in New Zealand and learned how much our stories matter. When she returned, Barbara started her Rethinking Learning podcast to capture stories from people who inspire her. Now with over 100 podcasts, she recently added reflections around controversial topics. There were discussions about mental health and the importance of developing wellbeing, a sense of belonging, and empathy. The pandemic exposed inequities and social injustices that needed to be discussed. After listening to the stories about how the struggles people experience helped them discover their WHY, Barbara started writing. She invited people that were on her podcast or who had reached out to her to share their stories for her book, Define Your WHY published in February 2020. One month later, the pandemic stopped the world and all of the planned events including book signings were canceled. Everything changed for everyone. This is a worldwide pandemic and what happened to her was not personal. Barbara started coaching again, listening to the concerns of educators, families, friends, and business owners. She continues to blog, host her podcast, invite educators to join My eCoach, do social media to connect people, and whatever she can to support educators and learners during this time. Blake Boles is the founder and director of Unschool Adventures and the author of Why Are You Still Sending Your Kids to School?, The Art of Self-Directed Learning, Better Than College, and College Without High School. He hosts the Off-Trail Learning podcast and has delivered over 75 presentations for education conferences, alternative schools, and parent groups.
