Kudos

We had a great time at OZeLive 2014 over the weekend. This inaugrual Ed Tech Down Under conference made a big splash with participants, too!
Brilliant, rich resource sharing.
-Carol Teitelman
Loved that this was open to anyone from around the world.
-Megan Iemma
Excellent way to bring different people together and in an efficient method of exchange.
-Kathryn Stoerzbach

Final Notes

Coach Carole and an intrepid organizing committee pulled together the first ever OZeLive - Ed Tech Down Under - virtual conference this past weekend (the recordings are already up HERE). They did a great job, and with Amy Brinkley's help, have given us a model that we're calling "host your own conference." With 40+ session for a specific time zone, we think this is a great model and are now anxious to plan some other similar events--most immediately for Africa and India. Do let us know if you have any ideas for specific groups or geographical areas that you think might be ready for this kind of event.

See you online!

Don't-Miss Events: School Leadership Summit (online) PLUS CoSN 2014, CoSNCamp, and GlobalEd in DC

The 2014 School Leadership Summit is Thursday, March 27th, online and free. This is the second year of this global, virtual event to help school leaders gather and share thinking and best practices. Keynote speakers this year will include Scott McLeod, Pam Moran, and Ira Socol; plus we'll have a special track of sessions from the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA). This is also a great chance for YOU to present if you are focused on institutional vision, teaching and learning from the leadership perspective, school reform, technology use issues, or more. To submit a proposal, go HERE. To become a conference partner organization, go HERE. To read the great reviews of last year's event, go HERE. Sign up on the conference site to receive regular updates, including the final schedule.

Coming up earlier in March, the 19th to the 22nd, in Washington, DC, is the annual CoSN Conference: http://cosnconference.org. CoSN is designed for education leaders to better understand their changing roles in creating the new face of learning, and it's a great event with terrific history and high-powered speakers. The conference starts with an opening "Town Hall Forum" with the Hon. Bob Wise and Yong Zhao, has David Pogue as closing keynote, and has special pre- and post-conference events and tours.

Of particular interest to many who have attended my unconference activities (most notably EduBloggerCon/Hack Education at ISTE and the Classroom 2.0 unconferences) is the first annual CoSNCamp, being held during CoSN on Thursday and Friday of the conference. Included in the fun will be "Spectacular Failures," a fast-paced sharing of risk-taking adventures that taught us something valuable (read: failures)! I'll be there helping the organizers, as well as sharing one of my own many "spectacular failure" stories. (Also, I have to give CoSN my "favorite logo of the year" award for this CoSNCamp logo. Awesome. Somebody deserves to take the day off!)
Finally, because Lucy Gray and I will both be at CoSN in DC, we've arranged (in truth, Lucy has arranged!) a GlobalEdCon Celebration and Meet Up for Tuesday, March 18th. We cordially invite you and your colleagues join us for an informal open house graciously hosted by our friends at the Sidwell Friends School on from 5 PM to 7 PM (Eastern). In 2014, we are celebrating the fifth anniversary of GlobalEdCon and we're excited to share information about our future plans with you at this face-to-face event. We also would like to thank those who have supported our previous events and introduce ourselves to others who may share our vision. Please join us for a relaxed evening of conversation and networking as we bring together individuals, schools and organizations who are interested in or are working in the global education space. You do need to sign up to attend as space is limited. If you are unable to attend, we'll be in DC for an extended period that week and would be happy to meet with any organizations interested in learning more about the Global Education Conference.

Have a great day!

Steve

OZeLive Starts Today - "Ed Tech Down Under"

If you're in the Americas, the inaugural (and free) OZeLive virtual conference starts today, Friday, at 4pm Eastern. If you're in Australia, New Zealand, or the South Pacific, the conference starts tomorrow, Saturday, at 8am Australia Eastern Time. Or if you are anywhere else in the world, you can see all of the sessions in your exact time by using the conference schedule page: http://australianeducators.ning.com/schedule.

OZeLive is the result of a dedicated world-wide team wanting to create an event on ed tech that was time-zone friendly for those "down under." Tired of having to be awake at 3am to catch a session live at one of our other events, they've built an great set of sessions that are going to put the shoe on the other foot for the rest of us! But don't worry, everything is going to be recorded, and there still may be sessions that turn out to be convenient to watch live--as you'll see by the schedule below, which is shown in US-Eastern Standard Time.

You will notice that I am the opening keynote speaker. Having lent technical support, and having come up with the original idea for the conference with Coach Carole last year, they may have felt obligated to invite me--but I promise to try and make it interesting! I'm going to talk about the "Learning Revolution:" why I think this is such an important time historically for learning, tying that back to what I've learned in the last seven years of building online communities for education, and then sharing my newest project: LearningRevolution.com. It should even be a little edgy and challenging...

Here are all the conference sessions, hour by hour, in US Eastern Standard Time. To see them in your own time zone go to http://australianeducators.ning.com/schedule, where you will be able to get the fuller descriptions and click through to enter the sessions. Hope to see you online!

Do you have a great quote on education? Send us your favorite education quote to add to our collection and we'll be sure to give you a shout out in our next newsletter.

Final Notes

I'm truly excited about the Learning Revolution Conferences that we are announcing next week. My FutureofEducation.com interview show, started seven years ago to look at the use of Open Source Software in education, quickly morphed into ed tech in general, and finally became much more about learning itself than any specific technologies. Having organized events in the library and homeschooling worlds, and planning one this year for museums, I've become more and more aware of the opportunity to take the discussions about learning that are happening in separate spheres and bring them together into one set of events--the online one for a more traditional conference, and the physical one in Black Mountain, North Carolina, for deeper conversations. Please stay tuned, and consider presenting or attending either or both!

See you online!

Final Notes

I've been thinking this week about the personal legacy that we leave--partly because of the impact that specific individuals have had on my life, and partly because of a long discussion with Adam Bellow in preparing for the ISTE virtual conference this week. I'm intrigued by the way in which very small things--a kind word, some particular encouragement, and even just seeing an example--can change the trajectory of who we are and what we do. We cannot script every interaction to provide that kind of impact on others, but we can work to create environments where there the time and opportunity to learn and grow are available. I'm going through boxes and boxes of photos that my grandmother kept and that have been unearthed after some 20 years, and somehow the photographic evidence of important life moments (like my grandfather on bended knee, staged of course, proposing to my grandmother in 1918 with an incredibly wide and genuine smile) reminds me of the personal legacy that is so important but often overlooked in how we deal with others... especially our youth. Then there is the great-grandfather I never met, who was once described to me by an orphaned niece he raised, as "the kindest man she ever knew." I'm quite certain he was not a wealthy man, but those few words have meant more to me than if I were to have learned of some business success or worldly accolades. Our influence, not our efficiency, is our true legacy.

Final Notes

One of the consolations of caring for my father before he died last month were moments too short for real work but just right to do something I love doing but rarely feel I can justify the time to do: going through some of the many collections of quotes that are collected online about education. I've always loved quotes, and think that even though they are often brief and out of context, or even sometimes misattributed, they perform a unique function of encapsulating categories of deeper thoughts about a topic. While this was necessarily a personal selection process, since the goal was to have good quotes to pull from for this newsletter and the website (and there are quotes that of course don't match my own thinking), there is no question that there is a significant disparity between the current public educational debates and the "wisdom of the ages." I am troubled at the shallow nature of much of what passes for educational thinking, and might suggest that some of you reading this newsletter to the very end here will find some food for thought in the collection we've been gathering here. Somehow we have to rediscover a broader sense of moral obligation and mission in education, and to cry foul when education is described in terms that make it a system of winners and losers, rigged toward those of privilege.

See you online!
