New Webinar: "A Plan For Library Emergencies: Medical Events, Fires, and Beyond"

"A Plan For Library Emergencies: Medical Events, Fires, and Beyond"
A "Safe Library" webinar, part of the Library 2.0 Service, Safety, and Security Series
with Dr. Steve Albrecht

OVERVIEW

In the realm of safeguarding our library premises, visitors, and team members, it's crucial to adopt a forward-looking perspective. We don't need to fixate on improbable scenarios (things that will likely never happen), but we do need to envision the potential challenges of things that might happen and be proactive, not reactive, in our approach. By thoughtfully planning and preparing comprehensively for potential emergencies, including medical events, fires, and unforeseen circumstances, we can avoid unfortunate or catastrophic incidents that otherwise could lead to hard, painful, and often expensive lessons as to what we should have done.

Recent disasters like the fires in Maui and the flooding from storms in California should remind all library leaders and staff members that we have to think boldly, put emergency plans in place, and then get back to the business of running, managing, and shepherding our library spaces.

This training session is all about helping library leaders and employees think in advance of what they need to do - at every level - and then be ready to do those things, in the rare or likely event an emergency or a near-miss event happens. We can’t predict fires, medical emergencies, serious injuries to staff or patrons, or the impact of climate, weather, and geology on our buildings (California had a 5.4 earthquake right during Tropical Storm Hilary), but we can be ready if the unthinkable becomes possible.

This 60-minute training webinar is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by trainer, author, and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all participants.

LEARNING AGENDA:

  • Creating an emergency handbook for your library, which includes plans and procedures for responses and evacuations.
  • Building your ICE box - In Case of Emergency.
  • Learning and meeting with state and local Office of Emergency Services (OES) personnel in advance.
  • What can we learn from recent national events to help us think about likely and unlikely emergencies?
  • Developing your first-responder network.

New Webinar: Performance Evaluations (2023): A Skill-Building Refresher for Library Leaders

Performance Evaluations: A Skill-Building Refresher for Library Leaders
    [2023 UPDATED VERSION]
Part of the Library 2.0 Service, Safety, and Security Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

    OVERVIEW

Good bosses provide feedback, through daily coaching conversations, frequent or necessary discussions about an employee’s performance or behavior, and through the more formal performance evaluation process. What’s that you say? Your library doesn’t do employee evaluations? This needs to change and this webinar will either help you start doing them or improve upon them.

All library employees have the right to know how they are doing in their jobs, what they need to do differently, and how, if they so choose, to move to the next level in the organization. The written, discussed, and archived performance evaluation document helps with all of those and more. It serves as a historical record, a coaching subjects referral, and both a goal-setting and a goal-achieving step-by-step plan. It tells your employees what they need to Keep doing (because it’s working well and it’s good for the library, patrons, and co-workers); Stop doing (because it’s against policy, a waste of time, or non-value-added activities); and Start doing (because it will help the employee work faster, smarter, easier, and be better for the library as a whole.)

Let’s get back to talking about the value of doing regular (annual, biannual, or even quarterly) performance evaluations. Your employees can’t fix what they don’t know about.

    LEARNING AGENDA:

    • Assessing your current Performance Evaluation (PE) form for improvements.
    • The value of more PE meetings, more often.
    • Avoiding the usual PE problems: the Halo Effect; the Recency Error; Grade Inflation; Sameness Error; evaluating what you’ve not actually seen the employee do; using labels instead of behaviors.
    • How to run a smooth, successful, and drama-free Performance Evaluation meeting.
    • Using the completed PE form as an ongoing coaching tool.
    • Connecting your PE process to your library’s Strategic Plan.

This 60-minute training webinar is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by ALA author and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate. This is an updated version of this webinar for 2023.

Dr. Albrecht Blog Post: "Should You Become Personal Friends With Certain Patrons? An Interesting Question About Boundaries"

We've just posted a new blog post by Dr. Albrecht in our "Library Service, Safety, & Security" section of Library 2.0: "Should You Become Personal Friends With Certain Patrons? An Interesting Question About Boundaries."

There are patrons that you serve on a daily or near-daily basis, who see you almost as much as they see their local coffee shop barista. They just love or really like the library and they may really like you. The question is: Can you or should you ever become personal, outside-of-work friends with a patron? Maybe this has already happened with you in your career and it has developed into a nice friendship. Maybe you tried to develop a friendship outside the library and it either never got off the ground or it ended badly.

New Webinar: "Working Safely in a Rural Location: Security for Staff When Help Is Far"

"Working Safely in a Rural Location: Security for Staff When Help Is Far"
A "Safe Library" webinar, part of the Library 2.0 Service, Safety, and Security Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

      OVERVIEW

Library staffers who work in a large urban or suburban library have the benefit of many co-workers, PICs, supervisors, managers, department heads, and directors to call on for immediate help, enforcing policies, and support, especially when it comes to dealing with challenging patron behavioral concerns. There is safety in numbers in larger branches, where you can change the ratios of confrontation and get help right away, including from branch security officers or local law enforcement.

If you work in a rural library location — which can be defined as: having a police or sheriff’s response that could be 20 minutes to two hours away; working alone or with only one or two other colleagues in the building; working in a one-room facility, with only one entrance/exit door — you need to consider every available safety and security option.

This 60-minute training webinar is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by trainer, author, and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all participants.

      LEARNING AGENDA:

      • Trusting your intuition when working alone. Should you stay or go?
      • Setting up help systems: phone trees, code words, and exit and evacuation plans.
      • Improving your physical security: cameras, panic alarms, better door hardware, remote locking devices, and safe rooms.
      • The value of Security Incident Reports.
      • How to get better results from your law enforcement agencies.
      • How would you handle patron scenarios that only rural libraries have to deal with?
