We're celebrating the fifth anniversary of our conference! Huge thanks and a shout-out to founding partner The School of Information at San José State University and its director (and conference co-chair), Dr. Sandra Hirsh, for the vision and support that has made this unique event a reality. With their help the conference community has grown to over 21,000 members, and we encourage you to learn more, make connections, and get future announcements by joining Library 2.0.

For our pre-conference event this year, we're excited to announce Teacher Librarian Day on Monday, October 19th, a five-hour special (and also free) series of online sessions around the topic of "Teacher Librarians and School Culture" - organized by Joyce Valenza, with lots of special guests, and supported by CiSSL, the Center for International Scholarship in School Libraries at Rutgers. The conference has inherited the Global Teacher Librarian Ning network, with over 7,000 members--learn more and connect with others at http://www.teacherlibrarian.org.

We sincerely hope you will join us. Below are event links, plus some sample posts and tweets you can use if you're able to help us promote either or both of these events. You can also forward this post/email. Please do let your networks know--it's all free!

Global Collaboration Day Has Arrived (It's Thursday in New Zealand!)

It’s now Thursday, September 17th, in the South Pacific--and that means Global Collaboration Day has arrived!

Over the next couple of days, students, classrooms, teachers, administrators, parents and organizations will be either attending and/or hosting events online that are designed to showcase and promote global collaboration. We (Lucy Gray + Steve Hargadon, co-chairs of the Global Education Conference) are the calendar coordinators but not the direct conveners: that is, over 100 groups have designed and planned their own events which we have then organized into a directory and in special calendars to allow these events to be seen in any time zone in the world.

This is a huge worldwide experiment to demonstrate the power of globally-connected learning.

Examples of projects and events include: a teacher in Australia who will lead others in learning to dance Greek-style via Skype and Edmodo; African students and teachers answering questions through Whatsapp; and classrooms participating in a global virtual amazing race. There are professional development sessions for individual pre-service teachers, in-service educators, and other adults; as well as projects for entire classrooms to join in. We encourage you to browse the event directory or the calendar and choose a compelling event to attend!

Here are some tips to keep in mind as the next couple of days unfold:
  • Read directions and our website carefully to prepare.
  • If you have a question about a particular event or project, contact the host of that event directly. Their contact information is posted in each event listing.
  • Join our Remind texting and email group for event reminders.
  • If you need live help, we’ll do our best to be available. We will be in and out of this Blackboard Collaborate room as our own schedules allow.
  • Be patient! Things may not always go as well as intended! Learning to be flexible and adapting to situations online is a big part of becoming a global collaborator.
Here are some important links for you to keep handy:
We appreciate the time and energy that our hosts have invested in this special day, and hope that our participants learn something new and become more confident with digital tools that allow for global connections. We also hope that you’ll meet new professionals to add to your professional learning network!

And we'd especially like to thank our partners and sponsors, listed below. Kudos to them!

See you online,

Lucy and Steve

All Invited to Global Collaboration Day - September 17th!

We would like invite you to join Global Collaboration Day, our first annual demonstration of global collaboration for educators. We are encouraging students, teachers, organizations and companies to host virtual events involving technology on September 17, 2015. (And since September 17 takes nearly 48 hours to start and finish across the globe, check out the calendar in your own time zone for all the activities!)

The primary goal of this whole day event is to demonstrate the power of global connectivity in classrooms, schools, universities, and institutions of informal learning and around the world. Global Collaboration Day will introduce others to the tools, resources, projects and programs that are available to educators today. We currently have over 130 schools and organizations representing about 29 different countries; 25 outreach partners have also committed to joining this worldwide event. Approximately 52 events are listed on our site and this list is growing by the day. There is no cost to participate at any level.

Here is how people and organizations can participate:
Examples of events that are currently scheduled include a Twitter chat on global learning, an asynchronous Twitter poll on chocolate, a survey on sunlight around the world, and a class live streaming using Periscope. Many organizations are hosting webinars and other activities to introduce educators to tools, resources and programs that will help them connect their classroom to the world. We recommend that activities be simple in scope and have low barriers to entry in order to attract participants. Ideas are listed on our host page. Events can be geared towards any audience including students, teachers, parents, and organization leaders.

Our current partner list includes TES, Edmodo, Remind, AFS-USA, iEARN-USA, the Global Campaign for Education - US Chapter, SMART, VIF International Education, and Edutopia. (We would love to add your organization to this list as well.)

For further information, please take a look at our website and press release. Also, check out this recent article on us from eSchool News and Lucy's Edutopia blog post.

Thanks and we hope to hear from you regarding this special day!

The Ultimate Goal of Education - Self-direction or Compliance?

The interview below was for Marie Bjerede and the interesting Student Outcomes project she is working on.

As the short interview progresses, you'll notice I become increasingly clear about the core question that lies at the heart of our beliefs about education, but which is often unspoken or even unrecognized:
Is our ultimate goal for our students to build the capacity for intellectual self-direction, or is it for them to be good at complying with external expectations?
The answer to that question, I believe, largely determines the health of our culture.

Current Sponsorship Opportunities: Library 2.015 & the Global Education Conference

Two events (actually, in both cases, sets of events) are coming up which are available for sponsorship.

1.  Library 2.015 (http://www.library20.com)

This is the fifth year of the Library 2.0 virtual conference, being held this year on October 20th. We've now split this conference, which had been held once a year in October, into two events--a "spring summit" and the main "fall conference." The conference keynote and distinguished speakers have been announced (see the site), we're close to having all the session slots filled, and we're anticipating another great event. The conference network has over 20,000 members.

In addition, for the third year, we are holding a half-day pre-conference event (also online and also free for participants) geared toward the K12 audience, on October 19th, and this year called "Teacher Librarian Day." As part of planning for this event, I've taken over the teacher librarian Ning community (7,000+ members, http://www.teacherlibrarian.org), and Joyce Valenza and a great team are creating another exciting set of sessions.

Sponsors can elect to sponsor either or both events, and sponsorships start at $500 and go up depending on benefits.

2.  The 2015 Global Education Conference (http://www.globaleducationconference.com)

The Global Education Conference is in it's 6th year, and has also split into spring and fall events. Previously run for five days (and nights) in the fall, we're now running it for three and a half days this November 16 - 19. This groundbreaking event has increasingly become the main attraction for those interested in globally-connected education. The conference network for this event also has over 20,000 members.

As well, we're running a pre-conference event for GlobaEdCon, called "Global Collaboration Day" (http://www.globalcollaborationday.org) on September 17th. This first-time event is allowing dozens of organizations to post special collaborative events in a public (and time-zone friendly) calendar, and has garnered article coverage from eSchool News as well as has had Edutopia signing on the official media outreach partner for the day.  There won't be any independent financial sponsorship for Global Collaboration Day, as we're going to extend sponsorship benefits from the GlobalEdCon sponsors to this event.

Sponsorships for the Global Education Conference start at $750 and go up depending on benefits.

=====

Please let me know if you'd be interested in sponsoring either or both of these projects, and I'm glad to get on the phone or send more information. If you missed my Teacher Entrepreneurship Week interview series (37 amazing interviews over 4 nights - http://learningrevolution.com/teacherentrepreneurship) it's worth checking out. TES.com sponsored the series to promote their new teacher marketplace, but the concept could be used for any number of specific topic ideas. Let me know if that triggers any ideas for you!

Cheers,

Steve
