New Webinar: "Emotional Safety for Library Workers - A Masterclass with Loida Garcia-Febo"

Emotional Safety for Library Workers
A Masterclass with Loida Garcia-Febo

The Library 2.0 Mental Health and Wellness Series

OVERVIEW

Prioritizing emotional safety for librarians is essential for creating a supportive, inclusive, and resilient library environment that benefits both staff and patrons alike. Emotional safety strengthens skills related to different aspects of a librarian’s work such as patron interactions and conflict resolution, and can enhance job satisfaction. Ideally, these skills support mental health, promote inclusivity, and help to maintain boundaries.

Studies indicate that feeling emotionally unsafe causes intense psychological distress. The implementation of principles of emotional safety is transforming workplaces, including libraries, by significantly impacting not only the productivity of employees but also their well-being. It requires an approach involving everyone in the team considering lines of action that are wholesome. These efforts support practices proposed by worldwide leading health organizations such as the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, and other relevant bodies.

In this masterclass, Garcia-Febo will take a deep dive into understanding emotional safety in the workplace and how to proactively strategize individual and organizational efforts to attain emotional safety in the workspaces. Securing a work environment where library workers feel safe, more engaged, and motivated is important for all, the library workers and the library.

This 60-minute training is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by Loida Garcia-Febo. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

ANNOUNCING: The "Teaching and Learning with AI" Summit from the Learning Revolution

OVERVIEW:

Our first Learning Revolution summit on AI: "Teaching and Learning with AI," will be held online (and for free) on Thursday, June 27th, 2024, from 12:00 - 2:30 pm US-Pacific Time.

What effects do generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, tools, and applications have on learning and teaching? What impacts will they have on our educational abilities and activities, collaboration and communication, literacy, student agency, and independent, informal, and lifelong learning? The Teaching and Learning with AI summit will consider these questions and more.

While AI technologies have many dramatic benefits, there are also challenges and concerns expressed by professionals, students, and educators about the impact of these new technologies on teaching and learning and the information ecosystem as a whole. Some are reasonably concerned about protecting privacy and confidentiality of students while using generative AI tools and ensuring equity and accessibility. Others worry about ethics, plagiarism, bias, misinformation, transparency, and the loss of critical thinking. And all in the learning professions are wondering how AI might allow or require changes in pedagogy and curricula.

Join us for this free virtual conference to learn how students, educators, and teachers of all types are utilizing generative artificial intelligence tools. Conversations and presentations in the conference will address the practical implications of these tools in the profession, and information on the call for non-commercial, practitioner-based proposals is below.

New Mini-Conference - "The Supportive Library: Helping Patrons Experiencing Homelessness"

OVERVIEW:

Our second Library 2.024 mini-conference: "The Supportive Library: Helping Patrons Experiencing Homelessness," will be held online (and for free) on Thursday, June 20th, 2024, from 12:00 - 3:00 pm US-Pacific Time.

From a librarian’s perspective, when we think of patrons experiencing homelessness, we automatically know and understand that they are an especially vulnerable population. We also know that to work in libraries is to be on the forefront of homelessness. However, while we are working directly with vulnerable patrons, many of us may not know how to help someone who is unhoused or who is experiencing food or other insecurities. We may not understand why they don’t trust us, or why they are striking out angrily toward us. We may not know the mental challenges or trauma they are experiencing or the loneliness and isolation they are feeling. In turn, this can expose our own vulnerabilities.

What we do know is that there are many challenges for our vulnerable patrons. What can we do to help strengthen these patrons, knowing that this requires being emotionally vulnerable ourselves? How do we find the emotional strength and courage to be open and authentic? What can librarians provide? We can try to build strength with our homeless community members by recognizing and having compassion for their vulnerabilities as well as our own. From this we may foster empathy, and cultivate a greater sense of belonging within our libraries.

For this conference, we invite you to embrace vulnerability, share stories of helping vulnerable patrons, express how you have been vulnerable and needed support, and what it means to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone.

Our special conference chair is Kimberli Buckley, M.A, MLIS, Senior Community Library Manager at Contra Costa County Library, and a lecturer at San Jose State University's School of Information.

We look forward to gathering online with you for this event!

New Albrecht Webinar - "The Fentanyl Crisis In Our Libraries: Awareness and a Safe Response"

The Fentanyl Crisis In Our Libraries:
Awareness and a Safe Response
Part of the Library 2.0 Service, Safety, and Security / Safe Librarian Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

OVERVIEW

Fentanyl, a synthetic opiate, is now the leading cause of death for adults 18 to 45 in this country. When it’s used--either by smoking it, injecting it, or consuming it in pill form--even a small amount causes respiratory failure and the person simply stops breathing. First responders and other concerned people who know how to use the Narcan nasal spray, can bring an overdosing person back to life, but not always.

After alcohol, fentanyl is the most problematic drug in the history of the US, killing 275 people every day, in our large and small cities. Libraries, library leaders, and staff have had to deal with the impact of this drug as patrons have come in under the influence, or near death, or seek to use it in our library stacks and restrooms. This session will provide an overview of the situation, provide education to library leaders and staff, and give some potential solutions.

LEARNING AGENDA:

  • Watch an interview segment Dr. Steve Albrecht did with Thomas Wolfe, a former homeless person and drug addict in San Francisco, who is now part of a coalition to help people get off the streets and into treatment.
  • Learn the signs of opiate overdose and when to call paramedics for a patron in respiratory distress.
  • Learn how Narcan functions to help save lives.
  • Watch a short training video on how to give the Narcan nasal spray to a person in an overdose situation.
  • Learn how a person in withdrawal from opiates (which happens every four to six hours) can mimic the signs of methamphetamine use.
  • Discuss security ideas to limit the possibility of fentanyl users using library restrooms and other parts of the facility to get high.
  • Verify that all staff are using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to safely handle and/or dispose of found narcotics or drug paraphernalia.
  • How to get help from the various social services agencies, private-sector, or grant-funded support groups can provide information to staff, drug users, and the community.

This 60-minute overview session is another in our “Safe Librarian Series” hosted by trainer, author, and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. A copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

DATE: Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 2:00 pm US - Eastern Time

How has artificial intelligence impacted library services, resources, and work so far? How have libraries responded to these evolving technologies to better support their communities? It's been over a year since generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT and Dall-E have been introduced in public spaces and consciousness, but AI has been around long before these tools yet there are still lingering concerns, challenges, and considerations. Join us for this free virtual conference to learn how libraries and library workers are engaging with artificial intelligence tools in their libraries from research support to information literacy to technical services. The conversations held in the conference will address the practical implications of these tools in the profession.

Our special conference chair is again Dr. Raymond Pun, the Academic and Research Librarian at Alder Graduate School of Education, and the Immediate Past President of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) and a Past President of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA). Dr. Pun will be joined by Helen Wong Smith and Thomas Padilla to talk about "AI and Archives" for the opening keynote, and Reed Hepler will give the closing keynote on "The Three Cs of AI-Generated Content: Copyright, Citation, and Circumspection." See below for more details!

We look forward to gathering online with you for this event!

SPECIAL NOTE: Anyone who registered for the first "AI and Libraries," held on March 21st, does not necessarily need to register for "Part II," as we will send all original registrants regular updates and attending links.
