Podcast: "Body Language - Learning to Stay Safe with Patrons"

We've just posted a new Dr. Albrecht podcast in our "Library Service, Safety, & Security" section of Library 2.0: "Body Language - Learning to Stay Safe with Patrons."
Have you ever looked at a patron and thought, "Is this person mad at me?" The answer is usually yes. We can misinterpret certain body language signals, especially if the person shifts from relatively cooperative and mostly polite, to a growing state of anger and resentment. Learn to stay safe with patrons who may be about to lose control, by looking more carefully at space, distance, closeness, tone, gestures, facial expressions, and body gestures.

New Webinar - "Training Library Staff in Service, Safety, and Security: Creating Training Programs That Meet Your Needs"

Training Library Staff in Service, Safety, and Security:
Creating Training Programs That Meet Your Needs

    [2023 UPDATED VERSION]
A "Safe Library" webinar, part of the Library 2.0 Service, Safety, and Security Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

    OVERVIEW

“Thanks for volunteering to go to the mandatory training” is one of management’s favorite sayings when it comes to getting employees in a room or online for some education, knowledge, and worthwhile tools. The problem starts with defining what are “worthwhile tools” for employees and what is required that they learn and know versus what is merely “nice to know” to help them do their jobs. We want to value their time with us, in the library and in the classroom.

It can help to see employee training as both a requirement and a reward. Required training helps our library leaders, risk managers, and legal colleagues feel that staff is getting what they need to stay compliant with policies, procedures, organizational protocols, HR rules and guidelines, and the Code of Conduct, especially if these are new or updated.

Other trainings may have more to do with being fun or useful without being legally necessary. Classes on team-building, new programs and new book arrivals at the library, and training gatherings with both content and a holiday theme fit both parts.

So where does training in providing skilled service to patrons, safety awareness training, and security training (which has a definite personal protection feel to it) fit in? Is it required or is it useful? Can it even be fun? (It is if Steve Albrecht has anything to stay about it.) Can we create training programs that staff really want to attend? That grow through word of mouth? That make them feel valued in their work and as important parts of the library organization?

This 60-minute training webinar is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by ALA author and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. This session is the next in our "The Safe Library Book Series,” for all library leaders and employees. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

    LEARNING AGENDA:

    • Getting Through the Four T’s: Teaching Tough Training Topics.
    • Adult Learning Styles: Andragogy
    • Using outside trainers or developing in-house resources.
    • What is “The Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve”?
    • Stop apologizing for security and the need for security training. (The ultimate goals are a peaceful library and to avoid having to call the police.)
    • Creating a “Challenge Culture” in the library. (How about rewarding employees who point out safety and security concerns?)
    • The value of using staff role-plays for challenging patrons and their behaviors.

Has all staff been trained in CPR techniques for adults, children, and infants and AED machine use? You can get free initial and refresher trainings for your staff by contacting your local fire agency, hospital, Red Cross office, or your nearest American Heart Association office.

New Albrecht Blog Post on Library 2.0 - "Meth on the Walls of Your Library? How to Know, What to Do."

We've just posted a new blog post by Dr. Albrecht in our "Library Service, Safety, & Security" section of Library 2.0"Meth on the Walls of Your Library? How to Know, What to Do."
Perhaps you‘ve seen the recent story where a library in Englewood, Colorado - a suburb near Denver - had to close for a serious cleaning because people who smoked meth in the building contaminated the restrooms. This follows a similar problem at a Boulder, CO library. According to an online news report in the Colorado Sun, from January 17, 2023, both libraries have had to do a serious de-contamination of the walls, counters, fixtures, and exhaust fans.....

Next Week's Webinar: "Staff Development and Training Best Practices: Effective Staff Preparation and Motivation (2023)"

Staff Development and Training Best Practices: Effective Staff Preparation and Motivation
        [2023 UPDATED VERSION]
Part of the Library 2.0 Service, Safety, and Security Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

        OVERVIEW

How do we keep staff motivated in these times of economic turmoil, budget cuts, aging facilities, apathetic elected officials, and salaries that need to go up?

What training programs do our staff members really want to go to, versus the mandatory sessions we make them attend?

How do we create a work culture that supports all employees, gives opportunities for promotions for those who want to move up, and growth for those who want to feel better connected?

How can we use praise, rewards, and public recognition, knowing that employees come to work for more than just their salaries?

Can we make work “fun”? Can we encourage employees to be happier with what they do?

How do we define the concept of “staff development” in ways that help library leaders move from abstract buzzwords to concrete, action steps?

We’ll cover these important questions, plus the agenda below, in this 60-minute training webinar presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by ALA author and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht.

A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

This is an updated version of this webinar for 2023.

        LEARNING AGENDA:

        • The current state of employee relations: quitting culture, “presenteeism,” and the challenges of public service work.

This Thursday: "What They Don’t Teach You in Library School: Security Matters & Talking Helps - It's All About People"

What They Don’t Teach You in Library School:
Security Matters & Talking Helps - It's All About People
A "Safe Library" webinar, part of the Library 2.0 Service, Safety, and Security Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

        OVERVIEW

"All right. Okay. The usual stuff isn't working." – Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) in "Ghostbusters"

On a break from teaching my library workshop, at one of the many libraries I’ve visited across the US, a participant will come up to me and say, "The information you're giving us is stuff they sure didn't teach us in library school."

Sometimes the staffers will say this to me with a gleam in their eyes, as if they are learning the secrets to success; other times it's a more rueful comment, as if they had missed out on some useful things prior to now.

I’ve heard variations of this same comment many times and it goes back to a point I have often made: this job is more than just books, periodicals, DVDs, video games, literacy programs, research, and providing information; it's all about people, on both sides of the desk. This session will help you see the parameters, perimeters, and boundaries for your job, as you work to do your best with and for patrons, your colleagues, your bosses, and your library.

This 60-minute training webinar is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by ALA author and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. This session is the first in our "The Safe Library Book Series,” for all library leaders and employees. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

        LEARNING AGENDA:

        • The demographics of library employees: who we are compared to who our patrons are.
        • Seeing safety and security in our role.
        • Moving from Condition White, to Condition Yellow, to Condition Red, as necessary.
        • Dr. Steve Albrecht’s “Essential Eight” and “The Critical Ten Questions.”
        • Knowing and using “Crucial Conversations” and “Verbal Judo.”
        • Reading patron body language: what you see is not always what you get.
        • Avoiding “shaming situations.”
        • Dr. Karl Albrecht’s “Code of Quality Service”: Ten Employee Service Behaviors

NEW WEBINARS: "Staff Development and Training Best Practices (2023)" + "What They Don’t Teach You in Library School"

Staff Development and Training: Best Practices: Effective Staff Preparation and Motivation

        • Helping employees avoid job burnout and work stress.
        • Using EQWLS: Employee Quality of Worklife Surveys.
        • Developing your in-house training team.
        • Selling, Not Just Telling: How and why library leaders can demonstrate the value of staff training.
        • Lessons from Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (plus a couple more from Steve Albrecht).
        • Creating rituals, rewards, celebrations, and ceremonies.
