Part of the Library 2.0 "Essential Librarian" Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

OVERVIEW

A 60-minute training webinar presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by ALA author and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht.

This overview session is another in our “Essential Librarian Series,” for all library staff and library leaders to consider certain security situations as being possibly not true in their facility. A discussion guide, as well as the presentation slides, will be available to all who participate.

LEARNING AGENDA:

Ten Library Security Myths - making sure we question what we think we already know. We'll discuss these commonly accepted (and often rationalized myths) and why it is important to know the truth of each.

  • Cameras don't stop crime.
  • You just can't control noisy or disruptive teens.
  • Women aren't violent.
  • Patrons don't often bring guns or knives into the library.
  • The police won't do an occasional walkthrough in the library.
  • We don't need to practice a Run-Hide-Fight drill; people will know what to do.
  • You should never lock the library down from the inside.
  • Burglar alarms don't stop burglaries.
  • Fire Marshals are responsible for our fire inspections.
  • Book alarms don't stop material thefts.

DATE: Thursday, May 26th, 2022, at 3:00 pm US - Eastern Time

Dr. Steve Albrecht New Blog Post: "Patrons Fighting in the Library: What to Do and When?"

We've just posted a new blog post by Dr. Albrecht in our "Library Service, Safety, & Security" section of Library 2.0"Patrons Fighting in the Library: What to Do and When?"
Three library scenarios, three different responses for you to consider:

Scene A). A six-year-old and his five-year-old brother begin to argue over a book each wants to read. They both are tugging on it and end up rolling on the ground. Their parents are not nearby. You walk over and _________.

Scene B). Two college students from different schools start arguing in the library. You’ve heard that they both play on their respective football teams. One is the size of a refrigerator with feet; the other is the size of the double doors at a convenience store. They begin to throw punches. Your library does not have a security officer, or if you do have one, he or she is not a Jiu-Jitsu expert. You walk over and ________.

Scene C). Two men who you know to be chronically homeless and longtime alcoholics start arguing in the library. Both men are sitting at different tables, about twenty feet apart. Their verbal disagreement has been going on for about 30 minutes. It started in low tones but by now they are screaming at each other. They each get up from their seats and begin to move closer to each other, slowly at first, but then picking up speed. You know them both by name. You walk over and ________.

We also invite you to our next paid webinar, May 26th: "Ten Security Myths That Every Librarian Needs to Know Are Wrong - and Exactly Why," part of the Library 2.0 "Essential Librarian" Series with Dr. Albrecht.

  • Do you feel like you’re in negative mental and emotional ruts that you can’t get out of?
  • Do you wake up tired every day, not sure how to change your life to make things better?
  • Have you lost your optimism and enthusiasm?
  • Is self-sabotaging behavior holding you back from personal freedom and the life you want?
  • Are you worried that things aren't going to get any better anytime soon?

Learn why you self-sabotage your own health, success, and happiness–and then learn the easy steps to start moving ahead positively, especially when the world seems overwhelming, discouraging, or just downright crazy.

There are huge but hidden reasons why we are extremely prone to self-sabotage and why we find it frustratingly difficult to be our absolute best. You not feeling confident is actually, as they say, a “feature and not a bug” of our current institutions and culture. Just recognizing all of the programming that is designed to make you feel discouraged and disempowered can immediately change your mindset and give you hope.

This webinar will give you seven practical and core strategies for overcoming self-sabotage and rescuing your sense of self. I hope you will join me.

"Urban Librarianship: Embracing Challenges and Opportunities" - Miniconference Registration and Call for Proposals

Our second Library 2.022 mini-conference: "Urban Librarianship: Embracing Challenges and Opportunities through Innovation, Leadership, and Best Practices," will be held online (and for free) on Thursday, July 14th, 2022.

Urban libraries are uniquely positioned to support the resiliency of their local communities and to deliver vital services to help individuals live their best lives. Urban libraries have a unique impact on the well-being of their communities and are essential agents to positively transform those communities and people as anchor institutions and community hubs, and as partners with local government, private sector, nonprofits, and other community-based organizations for collective impact.

Urban librarianship increasingly encompasses having to address many of society's challenges through the people we serve. This situates Urban libraries in the epicenter of the communities they serve and also presents new opportunities to impact them at even greater levels. As always, we are up to the challenge. This Library 2.0 mini-conference is a chance to share and to learn the ideas, innovations, tools, and techniques that will help all library leaders in their work with people and their communities.

Topics are likely to include:

  • Applied equity, diversity, and inclusion skills and programs
  • Anti-racist and social justice leadership and librarianship
  • Serving patrons suffering from trauma and other personal challenges
  • Mental health, safety, and security
  • Understanding the information needs of urban populations
  • Multi-lingual programming and outreach
  • Community engagement
  • Data science, analytics, and performance measurement
  • Working with individuals experiencing homelessness
  • Jail and reentry services for justice-involved patrons
  • eLearning, urban digital literacy, and digital equity

This is a free event, being held live online and also recorded.
REGISTER HERE
to attend live and/or to receive the recording links afterward.
Please also join this Library 2.0 network to be kept updated on this and future events.

Everyone is invited to participate in our Library 2.0 conference events, which are designed to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among information professionals worldwide. Each three-hour event consists of a keynote panel, 10-15 crowd-sourced thirty-minute presentations, and a closing keynote.

Participants are encouraged to use #library2022 and #urbanlibrarianship on their social media posts about the event.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The call for proposals for the mini-conference is now open. Details and instructions can be found here: https://www.library20.com/callforproposals.

Throughout his career, he has prioritized equity and the democratization of access to information, including nontraditional patrons and resources beyond traditional library materials. He is currently spearheading collaboration with neighborhood safety groups, City departments, and outside partners in order to establish safe spaces for youth. He has also initiated CPL’s first organized analysis of its processes with the goal of improving equity for patrons. This work began with the opening of CPL’s first regional library on Chicago’s West Side since the 1970s. Such leadership has earned Brown national recognition. He was named a Library Journal Mover & Shaker in 2016 and has received the Urban Libraries Council Top Innovator Award, the California Library Association PRExcellence Award, and a John Cotton Dana Award from the American Library Association in both California and Illinois. Most recently, he served on the California Library Association Board.

Ten Security Myths That Every Librarian Needs to Know Are Wrong - and Exactly Why

"Ten Security Myths That Every Librarian Needs to Know Are Wrong - and Exactly Why"

COST:

  • $99/person - includes any-time access to the recording and the presentation slides and to receive a participation certificate. To arrange group discounts (see below), to submit a purchase order, or for any registration difficulties or questions, email admin@library20.com.

Thursday's Microschool Summit - Stories of Starting Schools | Schedule Announced

Our first 2022 LearningRevolution.com mini-conference: "The Microschool Summit - Changing education, one small school at a time!" is being held online (and for free) this Thursday, May 19th, 2022. The focus for this event will be the actual starting of small schools.

Small schools have been around as long as humans have been teaching their children. One (or more) caring adult who seeks to empower youth to learn the skills and wisdom needed to lead a productive life in the community. Education today has become large and focused on many things beyond the needs of learners, such as tests, curriculum and assessment. The pandemic has shown a spotlight on the serious limitations of systemic education, and has caused many to take the learning of their children into their own hands.

Homeschooling, pandemic pods, and microschools are all ways that families have chosen to provide their children with a smaller, more child-centered learning environment. Join us at the first in a series of Microschool Summits to explore microschools, their origins, and their potential to reshape education, one student and one small school at a time.

This is a free event, being held live online and also recorded.

SPEAKERS & ORGANIZERS:

Mara Linaberger (@mlinaberger)
Founder & President, Microschool Builders, LLC

Dr. Mara Linaberger believes that each of us has chosen to be here at this moment in time for a specific reason—that we are each on a mission that we chose for ourselves. And that figuring out what we love, what we’re good at, and how we can be of service is the engine we need to fuel a lifetime of joyful learning. Mara also believes that school often slows down or stifles that excitement for students. So she is on a mission to create a global network of 100 microschools in the next 20 years—to harness education toward helping amazing children to develop their highest potentials while making learning fun again!

Mara is a life-long educator, author, technologist, artist, ballroom dancer, and musician, having spent 25 years in service as a public school educator, teacher trainer, and administrator. Completing a doctorate in Instructional Technology, she went on to earn a Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility in Pennsylvania. Launching Mindful Technology Consultants in 2013, she continues to train teachers at the masters level on the use of digital portfolios as alternative assessments and on bringing mindfulness practices into the classroom.

Mara is the international two-time best selling author of HELP! My Child Hates School and The Micro-School Builder’s Handbook. Mara currently lives in Harmony, PA, with her husband Michael while she travels far and wide, directly supporting clients in her global Microschool Builders programs.

Michael Strong (@flowidealism)
Founder and Chief Visionary, The Socratic Experience

He later went into Montessori secondary school program design at The Judson Montessori School (San Antonio), The Emerson School, and Hacienda School. He created The Winston Academy, where middle school students passed AP exams, making it the most academically advanced school in the country at the time. Another of Michael’s projects, Moreno Valley High School, a Paideia charter high school, was ranked the 36th-best U.S. public high school by Newsweek. More recently he co-founded KoSchool in Austin, Texas, which combined his high-performance approach to AP coursework and SAT score gains with a focus on entrepreneurial and creative projects. KoSchool, in turn, became the original model for The Academy of Thought and Industry, the high school model for the largest Montessori network in the United States. Students from Michael’s schools have been admitted to Harvard, Stanford, Georgetown, Smith, Bard, Bennington, McGill, UT-Austin, University of Colorado, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Parsons School of Design, Quest, St. John’s and many dozens of other post-secondary institutions. Amy Marotz
Founder & Director @ Awakening Spirit School and Vice President (& Microschools Specialist) at Microschool Builders

Amy Marotz helps highly sensitive students to reawaken their love of learning in just three months. Moving into its fourth year of operation, Amy’s microschool expanded to a farm space in fall 2020 to offer students more opportunities for self-directed, experiential, outdoor learning. Amy graduated with honors from St. Olaf College in 2002 with a double major in English and Studio Art and obtained a teaching certification and a Masters of Education from Bethel University in 2004. Her formative teaching years were spent instructing 5th-8th grade English at Minneapolis Academy (a college prep school for predominantly low income families) for three years. During these summers she taught Art for K-5th grades with the St. Paul Academy summer art program. When it came time to send her daughter to first grade, Amy knew she could provide exactly the environment that Alex needed to thrive. Amy jumped into homeschooling head-first and never looked back. In 2017, as a direct response to requests from her network marketing and entrepreneur family and friends, she decided it was time to start a new chapter and welcome more students into the fold. She is an officially recognized nonpublic (private) school in the state of Minnesota. When Amy expanded to a stand-alone farm school location, she also welcomed three new staff members!
