The Value of Role-Play Practice at Staff Meetings: Using Challenging Patron Situations to Get Our Responses Right

We've just posted a new Dr. Albrecht blog post in our "Library Service, Safety, & Security" section of Library 2.0: "The Value of Role-Play Practice at Staff Meetings: Using Challenging Patron Situations to Get Our Responses Right."

Real life rarely imitates the training experience. Except when it does. There is much value to "practice makes perfect" and "perfect practice makes for perfect execution." In other words, what we do in training we can remember and use on the library floor.

One way and one place to get it right is by using role-play scenarios, for about 45 minutes or so, at staff meetings, to practice what to say and how to say it, for more challenging, complex conversations and service interactions with patrons. One employee plays the part of the staffer and another plays the part of the patron. They each can add their own approach (and twists and turns) to the following 12 scenarios here, with an eye toward improving, problem-solving, and perhaps most importantly, by creating a common response that is used staff-wide, in similar situations, so we show a consistency of message.

The role-plays should only take about five minutes. At the end, the group can give both role-players some feedback as to what they heard and saw (body language is a big part of our success with challenging patrons too) and what they liked and what they might say or do differently. The goal is to be supportive and informative for all in the room.

30 Minutes to Fewer Student Interruptions - as soon as tomorrow!
Part of the LearningRevolution.com “Survive and Thrive!” Series

OVERVIEW

It's happened to all of us. We finally get in the swing of a lesson and a student has a behavior that just can't be ignored. Maybe they are making loud noises. Maybe they are attempting to leave the group/room. Maybe they are silently crying. You know they need help regulating their emotional state. But, how are you supposed to support that student and still teach the rest of the group? The answer is empowering students with self-regulation strategies they can use independently. Kara will be sharing 5 strategies for you to use with your students, all of which can be implemented quickly and easily. By giving students permission to self-regulate, you will create an environment for teaching with less student interruptions! And when you are empowered with these 5 strategies, you will be able to begin to empower your students immediately! These strategies are also a great way to start things off fresh after winter break!

Libraries and Student Success - Can you help me to know what works?

I'm working on a project to help school and public libraries create "student success centers" and I am looking for examples, feedback, and ideas of how this has been (or could be) done.

There is a short survey here: https://forms.gle/2f6q8fnG611o6gje6. Please consider responding.

In the survey, you can let me know if you want to be kept informed of progress on this project.

Many thanks!

Friday, November 19th:

 "Gangs in the Library: A Serious Security Issue"
Part of a special Library 2.0 series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

OVERVIEW

A 30-minute training webinar presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by ALA author and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht.

Street gang members are defined as a group who participates in criminal activities and organizes themselves around specific membership rites; geographic territory; a mindset (which may be economically, politically, or racially motivated); certain types of crimes related to drugs, theft, extortion, and violence; and specific clothing, tattoos, and names, that are often affiliated with a larger or a well-known gang. Some criminal gangs with a national or international reputation have been in operation since the end of World War II. In the US, over one million individuals - from large cities and rural communities, both males and females, and ranging in age from 12 to 60 - claim membership in over 33,00 organized street gangs. We do not want these people taking over our libraries and making patrons and staff afraid to come inside. This 30-minute webinar provides information, education, and advice to keep your library safe from the possibility of gang infiltration.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Criminal street gangs in the US.
  • What do gang members come to the library? (The answers may surprise you.)
  • Signs of gang activity in your library.
  • Talking to admitted or possible gang members: Know the gang culture.
  • What resources can libraries use, besides only the police, to protect their libraries, patrons, and staff from gang activity?

Recordings Now Publicly Available - Library 2.0 "Libraries as Community Anchors" Mini-Conference

Our third Library 2.021 mini-conference: "Libraries as Community Anchors," was held online on Thursday, October 21st, 2021.

The recordings of the mini-conference--which include the opening keynote panel, 13 presentation sessions, and the closing keynote--are now publicly available at https://www.library20.com/community-anchors. You do need to be logged into Library 2.0 with your account (free) to see the recording links.

Here is the conference overview:

Libraries are increasingly addressing challenges associated with digital equity, access, and inclusion, as well as issues of security and privacy.

For many years, community members have looked to public libraries to provide baseline, public, computer and internet access. In this way, libraries exist as important Community Anchor Institutions (CAIs), defined by the FCC “as schools, libraries, hospitals and other medical providers, public safety entities, institutions of higher education, and community support organizations that facilitate greater use of broadband by vulnerable populations, including low-income, the unemployed, and the aged” (FCC, 2011, p. 38).

In light of the recent Covid-19 pandemic and other natural disasters such as floods, drought, firestorms, hurricanes, and tornadoes, universal access to the internet has never been more important. Libraries increasingly have an important role to play: as second responders in large scale events via the development and deployment of collaborative connectivity projects; in developing strategies to bridge technological digital divides; and to promote digital access, equity, opportunity, and inclusion.

This event was organized in partnership with Don Means, Director of the GIGABIT LIBRARIES NETWORK, and Kristen Radsliff Rebmann, Professor in the School of Information at San José State University.

Everyone is invited to participate in our Library 2.0 conference events, which are designed to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among information professionals worldwide. Each three-hour event consists of a keynote panel, 10-15 crowd-sourced thirty-minute presentations, and a closing keynote.

Helping Students Learn to Play (and Win at) the Game of School - A Learning Revolution Thrive! Webinar

How to Win at the Game of School: a Survival Guide for Students and their Parents and Teachers
Part of the LearningRevolution.com 'Survive and Thrive!' Series

OVERVIEW

Outside of family, the high school experience can be the number one influence on a person's success or failure in college, work, and life. This webinar is about helping students understand that there are secrets to school success and then how they can play the game of school in such a way as to become strong, lifelong learners.

The content for this webinar comes from advice given by hundreds of teachers who contributed to a special survey on this topic. The true purpose of education is to help students become self-directing and capable adults, and just one of the dozens of ideas from this webinar could make a huge difference for a student you care about. You can share these principles with a student or students, or you can invite them to watch it with you, and by registering you will have access to the recording, a PDF version of the slides, and a light workbook.

By the end of this webinar, you will...
  • Learn how students can take all that time spent in school and shape it to their unique strengths;
  • Find ways to help a student who hates school;
  • Review the basic classroom and study skills for doing well on class assignments, tests, and homework;
  • Uncover the basic, intermediate, advanced, and "master" techniques that the top students use for school success;
  • Understand the "Four Levels of Learning," so you can partner with a student to build a solid game plan for his or her high school and college years;
  • Remove the typical parent-student struggles around school and homework.
We will also cover:
  • Understanding how schools actually work;
  • Helping teens build strong relationships with teachers, staff, and administrators, so they have a devoted "team" determined to help them get through school and then into college or university;
  • Identifying the practical skills that schools don't teach;
  • Building a home-centered, school-supported model for learning in a family.
