Setting Up Libraries as Self-Directed Learning Centers

OVERVIEW: 

Libraries have always been public institutions dedicated to serving their communities through education and empowerment. In addition, libraries have “leveled up” by creating digital spaces for their patrons, and educational programming that is geared to children, teens and adults. However, it’s time to take things one step further. In 2021, the number of parents choosing to homeschool has risen from 5% of all K – 12 students to up to more than 10%. Parents and students who are not homeschooling are looking for additional learning options focused on specific student strengths, needs, and enjoyment. Libraries are the Self Directed Learning Centers of the future, and it’s time that we see them as such.

In this course, we will address how libraries and librarians can pivot to create Self-Directed Learning Centers within their library space. These centers can look like “maker spaces”, or can just be centers where students get to explore their interests/ask questions/deep dive into specific topics. Libraries already have all the resources needed – so all that is needed is a space for reinvention and reconnection post-COVID. Come reimagine your library space and your role in that space!

Gina Riley, Ph.D. is a Clinical Professor and Program Leader of the Adolescent Special Education Program at CUNY – Hunter College. Dr. Riley has over fifteen years experience working with teens diagnosed with learning disabilities and emotional/behavioral disorders. She is also a seasoned academic, with years of teaching, research, and supervisory experience within the fields of special education, psychology, school psychology, and mental health counseling. In addition, Dr. Riley has extensive experience in online education and distance learning at the college/university level. She is known internationally for her work in the fields of homeschooling, unschooling, and self-directed learning. Her books include

Unschooling: Exploring Learning Beyond The Classroom (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020) and The Homeschooling Starter Guide (Rockridge Press, 2021).
