New Albrecht Webinar - "The Fentanyl Crisis In Our Libraries: Awareness and a Safe Response"

The Fentanyl Crisis In Our Libraries:
Awareness and a Safe Response
Part of the Library 2.0 Service, Safety, and Security / Safe Librarian Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

OVERVIEW

Fentanyl, a synthetic opiate, is now the leading cause of death for adults 18 to 45 in this country. When it’s used--either by smoking it, injecting it, or consuming it in pill form--even a small amount causes respiratory failure and the person simply stops breathing. First responders and other concerned people who know how to use the Narcan nasal spray, can bring an overdosing person back to life, but not always.

After alcohol, fentanyl is the most problematic drug in the history of the US, killing 275 people every day, in our large and small cities. Libraries, library leaders, and staff have had to deal with the impact of this drug as patrons have come in under the influence, or near death, or seek to use it in our library stacks and restrooms. This session will provide an overview of the situation, provide education to library leaders and staff, and give some potential solutions.

LEARNING AGENDA:

  • Watch an interview segment Dr. Steve Albrecht did with Thomas Wolfe, a former homeless person and drug addict in San Francisco, who is now part of a coalition to help people get off the streets and into treatment.
  • Learn the signs of opiate overdose and when to call paramedics for a patron in respiratory distress.
  • Learn how Narcan functions to help save lives.
  • Watch a short training video on how to give the Narcan nasal spray to a person in an overdose situation.
  • Learn how a person in withdrawal from opiates (which happens every four to six hours) can mimic the signs of methamphetamine use.
  • Discuss security ideas to limit the possibility of fentanyl users using library restrooms and other parts of the facility to get high.
  • Verify that all staff are using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to safely handle and/or dispose of found narcotics or drug paraphernalia.
  • How to get help from the various social services agencies, private-sector, or grant-funded support groups can provide information to staff, drug users, and the community.

This 60-minute overview session is another in our “Safe Librarian Series” hosted by trainer, author, and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. A copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

Albrecht's "Layla Videos: Learning More About Library Service, Safety, and Security From the Bestest Beagle Ever."

We've just posted a set of video resources by Dr. Steve Albrecht as part of our "The Safe Library" section of Library 2.0: "The Layla Videos: Learning More About Library Service, Safety, and Security From the Bestest Beagle Ever." From Dr. Steve:
"I have the Sweetest Dog on Planet Earth, Layla - part Beagle, part Border Collie. I know you think your dog has already won that category, but sorry, mine has it wrapped up.
"As such, I decided to share her intelligence and gorgeousness with the world, using our YouTube channel for The Safe Library. Every week, I post a short clip (two to three minutes max), on a wide variety of subjects centering around my core of The Safe Library and The Safe Librarian.
"The video clips are also posted at our Safe Library website as well as on my Twitter/X feeds @TheSafeLibrary and @DrSteveAlbrecht.
Layla (yes, named after the Eric Clapton song) and I are happy to hear from you and take your suggestions for future video topics to cover. Enjoy!"
Dr. Albrecht's twice-monthly Library 2.0 podcasts, interviews, and blog posts are available for free, as are: access to 53,000+ other library professionals, our regular mini-conferences, and all the conference recordings. We also offer a series of Dr. Albrecht and other paid webinars and recordings which are available for individual or group viewing here.
